Dr. Steven W. Carlson D.D.S.

Background and Education

Dr. Carlson was born and raised in Colorado Springs. He graduated from Widefield High School, just south of Colorado Springs. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, earning a BS in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance. After spending the next three years working for a Wall Street firm as a manager in their Denver office, he attended the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry, graduating with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2001. He is committed to education and averages over 50 hours of dental continuing education hours each year.

Professional Organizations

Dr. Carlson is a member of the American Dental Association, the Colorado Dental Association, the Colorado Springs Dental Society and the Seattle Study Club of Southern Colorado.

Personal

Dr. Carlson is married with two children and considers his family his greatest accomplishment. He loves all aspects of home remodeling and construction, enjoys fly fishing and is involved in coaching high performance driving at the various Colorado road course tracks.

Dr. Shelby Backman, Associate Dentist

Background and Education

Dr. Backman was born and raised in San Diego and has lived in Colorado since 2015. Working as a dental assistant, Dr. Backman fell in love with the dental profession. She graduated from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada with her Doctor of Dental Surgery in 2021.

Her approach to dentistry is simple: to meet you where you are. She looks forward to getting to know you and providing the level of care and compassion you've come to expect from our family at Mountain Vista Dental. 

Professional Organizations

Dr. Backman is a member of the American Dental Association, the Colorado Dental Association, the Colorado Springs Dental Society and the Seattle Study Club of Southern Colorado. She is also a board member for the Colorado Springs Dental Society and participant of Colorado Mission of Mercy, which aims to provide free dental care to those in need. 

Personal

Dr. Backman and her husband, a retired veteran, live with their three dogs and larger-than-life cat (ask her for photos!). She volunteers for the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center and enjoys bouldering and crafting in her free time.

Our staff is trained and skilled, and enjoys getting to know our patients and going the extra mile for them. Each member of our treatment team is either a registered dental hygienist or an expanded duty dental assistant.

Administrative Staff

Our office staff has years of experience in treating patients with the highest level of care. We strive to stay abreast of the latest in technological advances by regularly attending continuing education courses and seminars.
